Cashmere High School has had a successful Gifted and Talented Education Programme for a number of years now. This programme spans the Junior and Senior school with two extension classes in the Junior school.
One of the most effective ways to educate gifted and talented students is to widen their horizons, rather than pushing them further down the main-stream tracks. Senior students gain this “widening of horizons” here at Cashmere High School through the STAR Program where they enrol in specific subjects at one of Canterbury’s tertiary institutions and also through classroom extension via their subject teachers.
Our Year 9 Extension Class is extended through their “My Passion Projects” which is a year-long project of their choosing. Some of the projects our students have embarked on this year include a short novel, contemporary art pieces, film production, computer programming, and many more. The remarkable efforts of our Year 9 students are presented to their families and key staff at the annual presentation evening in early December. Following this event, Cashmere High School hosts a “fun-day” for the two junior Extension Classes where students can participate in photography, orienteering, robotics, rock climbing and other exciting opportunities.
